FEATURED BUSINESS' UNDER Bangor
Accommodation in BangorSituated at the north end of the Menai Straits, facing Conway Bay, Bangor is a busy and rather crowded little town, the centre of educational and cultural interests in N. Wales, home of the University of Wales, and an important road and rail junction.
The old town, called Lower Bangor, lies in a valley, while the University and residential district of Upper Bangor is on the crest of a rise overlooking the straits, with a grandstand view into Snowdonia. Bangor is one of the most ancient towns in Wales. Said to date from 525 A.D., when Deiniol built a monastery there, its name “Ban-chor” means the “High-choir”.
As a holiday resort it is not perhaps as popular as the more easterly towns, for there is little good beach, and bathing can be dangerous. But there is a good 18-hole golf course, as well as facilities for tennis, boating, and trout-fishing on Llyn Ogwen or Llyn Idwal. Steamers to Llandudno or to Liverpool make the town more accessible than some, while it, in turn, makes an excellent kicking-off point for Snowdonia or Anglesey.
The Cathedral, in Lower Bangor, is not among the architectural masterpieces. It is low lying and has a squat appearance. Yet it is a handsome enough Gothic, cruciform building, with good examples of Perpendicular and Decorated windows in the nave. The original church of Deiniol has, of course, vanished without trace. Later buildings on the same site were destroyed in 1071 and in 1404. In 1532 the church was again rebuilt, and this building was restored by Sir Gilbert Scott in 1869. Yet traces of the early Norman church still survive.
The University College of North Wales is the most imposing building in Upper Bangor; it dominates the old town from its spacious position on the hill. Near the University is the N. Wales Heroes Gateway, a noble memorial Archway, with the Roll of the Dead inscribed in the tower room above the arch
