Accommodation in BeddgelertThis beautiful village, 7 miles north of Portmadoc, stands at the junction of three Snowdonian valleys, and straddles the river Colwyn. There are several good hotels, making the village both a delightful spot for a restful holiday in the heart of the great hills and near the famous Aberglaslyn Pass, and also a good climbing centre for Snowdon or Moel Hebog.
The name (pron. Beth-gelert) is supposed to mean the “grave of Gelert,” the faithful hound of Llewellyn, which was slain by the Prince after it had saved his infant son from a marauding wolf. Actually, the tale is untrue and was invented by an enterprising hotel-keeper of the village. Nevertheless, Gelert’s Grave, near the village, is worth a visit if only because it is an excellent viewpoint. The name really means “grave of Kelert,” an early saint.
