1.Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff
This amazing architectural wonder and perhaps the most famous sight in all of Wales, this modern masterpiece mixes Welsh and English, ancient and modern. No trip to Cardiff is complete without a photo opportunity in front of the Millennium Centre. The exterior is panelled with multi coloured slate collected from Welsh slate quarries. The metal on the exterior has been treated with copper oxide so that with age it will look better. The building is colloquially referred to as ‘The Armadillo’. The text on the front of the building states in respective languages Welsh – CREU GWIR FEL GWYDRO FFWRNAIS AWEN (‘Creating Truth Like Glass From Inspiration’s Furnace). English – IN THESE STONES HORIZONS SING.
2.Ruthin Craft Centre
In the small town of Ruthin, the craft centre is considered truly a stylish example of modern architecture in Wales. This centre since its establishment has for a long time boasted an impressive reputation and a hub of creation and craft. The new building had to reflect this while being a practice and purpose built building.
3.Senedd
Home of the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG), this building is a sustainable design, using materials such as slate, and Welsh oak and other materials. It aims to be a symbol of a new nation that Wales has become. The Senedd is on a prime position on the waterfront of Cardiff Bay.
4.Hafod Eryri-Snowdon
It won’t surprise you that building a café at the top of the largest mountain in all of Wales was a challenge to build. The builders had to consider the harsh weather conditions that the summit would be exposed to all year around (including the snow come wintertime) while still being pleasing on the eye. The grey stone structure is a roaring success, and even houses a café so that you can enjoy a bite to eat midway through your journey.
5.Galeri Caernarfon
Caernarfon’s arts and culture complex combines the elements of a performance theatre, film, music, dance, comedy, workshops art gallery. This multipurpose site was designed with steel frames and features such as the cafe’s LED Strip Lighting was sourced from local companies from North Wales. Materials were kept to a minimum, while keeping steel beams are left exposed. This was done in a stylish effect to pay homage to the area’s industrial roots.
There are many amazing firms doing some truly high quality designs. Whether it’s Architects Flintshire or from locations all over the country, Wales can be proud of its marvelous architecture.
