When you associate a country with wine, obviously it’s France that comes to mind, and this is because France has a history of being renowned for producing outstanding wine because of its wide variety of grapes, suitable weather and of course a rich wine culture.
French Wine is an essential part of the French culture; first originating in 6th century BC from Greek colonists, France is now at the forefront of winemaking and up until 2008 were unmatched in wine production until Spain overtook them, however France is now once again the largest producer of wine, producing 50 to 60 million hectolitres (7 to 8 billion bottles) every year.
French Red Wine grapes include ‘Merlot’, ‘Grenache’, ‘Syrah’, ‘Carignan’ and ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’. The majority (69.9%) of wine produced in France is red, as opposed to white. Due to the recent drop in consumption in France, the producers rely much more on foreign sales.
