Halogen free cables are being advised to be used in public areas and buildings, along with materials which are non-hazardous to the public in case of a fire. Contractors are starting to use these materials in order to help prevent life threatening situations and effects. It can be said that the fumes that are caused from materials during a fire can be more harmful than the fire itself. This calls for the increased use of Halogen free cables.

For a cable to offer security during a fire; it must pass various tests regarding halogen content, low smoke density and flame propagation. Halogen Free and LSF (Low Smoke and Fume) are completely different types of cable. LSF cables are a modified form of PVC and can still give off a large amount of harmful fumes, such as hydrogen chloride, as well as still produce a large amount of black smoke. Halogen free cables emit no more than 0.5% hydrogen chloride and are totally different to LSF cables.
