15 Essential House Moving Tips
Coastline Removals in Bangor can make moving home a breeze. Here are 15 essential tips to consider before you book with a removal company.
1. Categorise Boxes
Keep everything in order and save time when you move into your new home by ensuring that all items in boxes are categorized and packed by which room they belong in.
2. Let Go!
Letting go of things you’ve had for years can be a difficult decision, but moving house is the best time to do it. To save packing space, donate or sell clothes and other items that you no longer wear or use. This will also prevent your new home from looking too cluttered once everything’s been unpacked!
3.Write a List
Make a list of everything you need to do and hang it up somewhere that is frequently in sight. Whenever another idea pops into your head, write it down. This will help you feel more organised and reduce some of the stress involved with moving.
4. Get Free Boxes
Supermarkets and other shops often throw away cardboard boxes, and are always happy for people to take them away.
5. Essentials Box
Make an essentials box ready for when you move in. You’ll likely be too tired to start unpacking when you move into your new home, so pack a few cups, plates, teabags, toilet roll and fresh bedding into a separate box.
6. Cancel Bills
Remember to cancel bills such as electric, gas and water direct debits. Forgetting to do this could lead to you paying for the new tenants facilities!
7. Label Everything
It may be easy to remember which box is which now, but in a couple of weeks it might not be as clear. Labelling which room each box needs to go in saves time when unloading.
8. Small Boxes for Heavy Items
Putting heavy objects into smaller boxes makes them easier and safer to carry. You don’t want to put your back out before moving into your new home!
9. Put Toiletries in a bag
Put liquid toiletries into zip lock bags before packing them away. This will prevent them leaking all over other items in the box, should they become damaged in transit.
10. Essential Packing Supplies
Make sure you already have the essential supplies before you start packing. These include tape, scissors, bubble wrap, paper tissue and marker pens.
11. Keep Important Documents Together
Consider investing in a folder to keep all of your important documents together during your move.
12. Defrost fridge/freezer days before you move
Defrost your fridge and freezer at least a day before you move. Leaving it too late can cause it to leak and become smelly.
13. Take Pictures
If you are renting, take pictures of your previous home for proof that you have left it in a clean state. Some landlords impose cleaning fees for the smallest of things, so it’s good to have some proof that you left it in good condition.
You should also take pictures of any dirt or stains in your new home, in case your new landlord thinks that you have made them.
14. Wrap delicate things in clothing/towels
If you don’t have any bubble wrap available, you can wrap delicate items such as glassware into clothing and towels.
15. Take photos of electronics
Taking a picture of the often complicated wiring on computers or televisions can help speed up the process when reconnecting them in your new home.
