The Italians how been producing high quality Italian Red Wines for many years and the country is the second largest italian red winewine producing country in the world after France.  Wine making in Italy dates back to 1000BC when the ancient Greeks settled in Sicily. The Italians love their Red Wine and are the world leaders in wine consumption.

There are many wine regions throughout Italy with some of the most popular being Tuscany, Sardinia, Sicily and Piedmont.

Italy has a wine classification system which consists of four classes. Two of these fall under the EU category QWPSR and the other two fall under the category of Table Wine.

The four classes are:

Table Wine

  • Vino da Tavola (VDT) – This means that the wine is simply made in Italy. This type of wine is usally basic and made for local consumption
  • Indicazione Geografica Tipica (IGT) – This denotes wine from a specific region in Italy.  These wines are generally a higher quality than simple table wines.

QWPSR

  • Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC)
  • Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG)

Both of the above refer to wines that are from a specific zone. These are more specific that IGT, the grapes are also more specifically defined.
